JAMB releases results breakdown of the 2025 UTME Examination, revealing that about 1,955,069 candidates participated in the nationwide test.
Shockingly, over 50% of these candidates scored below 200, raising concerns about the overall academic preparedness of students seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
Only 4,756 candidates achieved scores of 320 and above, while 12,414 candidates managed to score 300 and above, according to the official analysis provided by JAMB.
In a rare move, 40,247 underage candidates (below age 16) were permitted to sit for the exam for performance evaluation. However, just 467 of them (1.16%) met the benchmark for “exceptional ability,” and their eligibility for future admission stages is still pending further review.
JAMB also disclosed that 97 candidates were involved in confirmed exam malpractice, with 2,157 others under investigation. Furthermore, 71,701 candidates were absent, and those affected by biometric verification issues will be given a chance to re-sit the exam once cleared.
The 2025 UTME was held from April 25 to May 5, and remains the key requirement for gaining admission into Nigerian universities.

What does your JAMB score mean
When you see your JAMB result, the big question you’ll likely ask yourself is whether it’s good enough to gain admission. To answer this, it’s important to understand the JAMB cut-off marks and how they affect your chances.
JAMB sets a general minimum cut-off mark for universities each year. For example, in 2024, the approved cut-off mark was 140 for universities, while polytechnics and Colleges of Education (COEs) had a baseline of 100. However, these are just the minimum scores required to be eligible for admission.
Individual universities and courses often set their own specific cut-off marks, which can be higher than the general baseline. For instance, competitive courses such as Medicine, Law, and Engineering typically require scores above 200 to stand a strong chance of admission. Each school determines its own criteria based on the demand for certain courses, available spaces, and other factors.
Therefore, while your result may meet the general cut-off mark, it’s essential to research the specific requirements for the university and course you’re applying to. If you’ve scored above the general baseline but below the required threshold for your desired program, you may need to consider alternative options or reapply in the future.
Conclusion
The 2025 UTME results reveal a concerning performance trend, with the majority of candidates scoring below average.
JAMB emphasizes the need for improved preparation and integrity in future examinations, reaffirming its commitment to upholding standards in Nigeria’s education system.
