JAMB Orders Review of UTME 2025 After Outrage, Complaints

JAMB Orders Review of utme

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB orders review of UTME 2025 following widespread complaints and public outrage over technical glitches, incomplete questions, and a concerning number of unusually low scores. The decision to conduct a thorough review comes in response to an “unusual volume of complaints” from candidates and parents after the release of the examination results last Friday.

In an official statement, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, acknowledged the unusual nature of the complaints that have been circulating since the release of the UTME results. According to the Board, these complaints—especially those originating from certain states—prompted the fast-tracking of the post-examination review process, which is usually conducted several months after the examination.

“We are particularly concerned about the high volume of complaints emanating from some states within the federation. As a result, we are reviewing these concerns meticulously to identify and address any potential technical issues that may have contributed to the challenges experienced by candidates,” the statement read.

JAMB Orders Review of UTME to scrutinize the entire examination cycle, which encompasses three main stages: registration, examination, and result release. The Board emphasized that it would not hesitate to implement “appropriate remedial measures” should any faults be identified within these stages.

Candidates Threaten Legal Action

In order to ensure a comprehensive and unbiased review, JAMB has engaged experts from various sectors. These include members from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, Chief External Examiners, who are heads of tertiary institutions, the Educational Assessment and Research Network in Africa, measurement experts, and Vice Chancellors from a selection of Nigerian universities.

The spokesperson for JAMB stated that if any issues or glitches are discovered during the review, the Board is committed to taking swift action to remedy the situation. “Should we find any glitches or irregularities, we will implement necessary corrective measures as promptly as we do with any issues that arise during the examinations themselves,” the statement affirmed.

This intervention comes as thousands of candidates, who are disillusioned with the results, prepare to file a class-action lawsuit against JAMB. Many of the candidates have voiced their frustration, claiming to have faced technical malfunctions, incomplete question displays, and other issues during the examination. These concerns, coupled with the publication of the disturbing results, have sparked a massive outcry.

A key point of controversy surrounds JAMB’s statistical data revealing that over 1.5 million of the 1.9 million candidates who participated in this year’s UTME scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks. This result has triggered national concern, with many questioning the integrity of the examination process. Social media platforms have seen the rise of the hashtag #ThisIsNotMyResult, as candidates and parents share their shock and disappointment over the low scores.

The issue was further exacerbated after JAMB’s release of the results, which showed a disproportionate number of candidates with scores far below expectations. Many students and their families are now calling for the Board to provide more transparency in its marking and result collation processes, arguing that the low scores are indicative of either systemic failures or errors in the conduct of the examination itself.

Minister, Registrar Reacts

In response to the mounting pressure, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, defended JAMB’s anti-malpractice measures. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief last week, Alausa attributed the mass failure to the effectiveness of JAMB’s anti-malpractice technology. He argued that the implementation of the Board’s computer-based testing system had made cheating nearly impossible, which, in his view, contributed to the high volume of low scores. The Minister also suggested that this anti-malpractice system should be extended to other national examinations like WAEC and NECO.

Despite JAMB Registrar Is-haq Oloyede’s defense of the results, wherein he downplayed the complaints by citing similar performance trends in previous years, the pressure on the Board continues to escalate. Many students and their parents remain dissatisfied, calling for a full and transparent review of both the examination and the result collation process.

In the face of increasing public scrutiny, JAMB Orders Review of UTME to restore public trust in its examination processes. The review, which is expected to be swift and thorough, aims to determine whether any technical malfunctions or system glitches contributed to the mass complaints and low scores. The Board has reassured all stakeholders that it remains committed to ensuring fairness and transparency in its operations, and it will continue to take necessary actions to address any concerns raised by candidates and the general public.

Final Words

As the review process moves forward, candidates, parents, and the wider public will be watching closely, hoping that the Board will provide a clear explanation of the issues and take meaningful steps to rectify any problems. The outcome of this review could shape the future of the UTME and the public’s perception of the examination process.
