Mass Failure and National Outcry

The release of the UTME results last Friday the 9th of May 2025 has sent shockwaves through the country, as more than 1.5 million of the 1.9 million candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks. The low scores have led to widespread criticism, with many questioning the integrity of the examination process. While the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, praised the results as evidence of successful anti-malpractice measures, critics believe that technical failures were responsible for the mass underperformance.

One of the loudest voices calling for accountability is Alex Onyia, the CEO of Educare and an education advocate. Onyia has confirmed that over 8,000 candidates have filed formal complaints with the examination body regarding technical glitches and other issues they encountered during the exam. In a statement shared on social media, he revealed that legal action is imminent, with the affected candidates now preparing to sue JAMB.

“Currently, we have 8,391 students who have sent in their complaints regarding the glitches in the JAMB 2025 exam,” Onyia said. “There is ample evidence to prove that JAMB’s system was inefficient, thereby causing serious harm to these students’ mental health.”

Allegations of Missing Questions and Technical Failures

Some candidates have raised numerous allegations of technical failures during the exam. Many candidates reported missing questions in key subjects, including the Use of English section. One candidate who took the exam at a Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre in Maitama, Abuja, revealed that her Use of English questions were incomplete. Despite raising the issue during the exam, her result later reflected a score of 170, which she believes does not accurately represent her abilities.

Another candidate, who sat for the exam on April 26, was shocked to see her score drop from 287 in 2024 to 173 this year. She shared that several others who took the exam on the same day also reported missing English questions, and many felt that their results were unfairly impacted by the system’s failures.

The frustration is not limited to the candidates alone; parents have also expressed their dissatisfaction with JAMB’s handling of the exam. One parent demanded that JAMB remark the results, stating that their children were exceptional students who should not have scored below 200. “Many complained of incomplete questions and other technical issues,” the parent said. “JAMB has said nothing. This cannot be swept under the rug.”

JAMB’s Silence and the Path to Legal Action

As of the time of this report, JAMB has yet to respond to the specific complaints regarding technical failures and missing questions. Attempts to reach Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board’s spokesperson, have been unsuccessful, and the lack of a response from JAMB has only intensified the public outcry.

With legal proceedings set to begin at the Federal High Court, all eyes are now on JAMB’s next move. Candidates and their supporters are determined to see justice served, and they are hoping that the court will hold the examination body accountable for the issues that have affected the 2025 UTME.

Conclusion

The growing number of candidates Set to Sue JAMB is a clear indication of the dissatisfaction felt by many students and parents regarding the technical failures that marred the 2025 UTME.

With legal action now underway, JAMB’s response to these issues will be closely watched. As pressure mounts for transparency and accountability, the fate of thousands of students rests on the judicial process.

Only time will tell whether JAMB will take responsibility for the glitches that plagued this year’s examination, but one thing is certain: the call for justice is unwavering, and candidates are determined to have their voices heard.
