The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced the release of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, ending the anxious wait for nearly two million candidates across Nigeria.
The announcement was made during a press briefing held at JAMB’s headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, on Friday, May 9, 2025.
The board also disclosed that while the majority of results are now available, a total of 39,834 results have been withheld due to various issues ranging from confirmed malpractice to ongoing investigations.

JAMB Releases Result for Over 1.9 Million Candidates
According to official data, 1,955,569 candidates participated in the 2025 UTME. However, only 420,415 candidates — representing 21.5% — scored 200 and above, which is the typical minimum score required by most Nigerian universities.
The performance breakdown is as follows:
- 4,756 candidates scored 320 and above
- 7,658 scored between 300 and 319
- 73,441 scored between 250 and 299
- 334,560 scored between 200 and 249
- 983,187 scored between 160 and 199
- 488,197 scored between 140 and 159
These figures reveal that more than 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, reinforcing concerns about the persistent decline in academic performance in national examinations.

Underage Candidates and Performance Statistics
In a notable departure from its usual policy, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) allowed 40,247 underage candidates—those below 16 years old—to participate in the 2025 UTME strictly for learning and performance assessment purposes.
This exception was not intended to confer eligibility for admission but to provide these young candidates with early exposure to the exam environment.
However, only 467 candidates, representing approximately 1.16%, met the board’s benchmark for “exceptional” performance, typically defined by a UTME score between 280 and 300 or higher.
Despite their impressive results, these underage candidates remain ineligible for university admission in 2025, as JAMB’s policy requires candidates to be at least 16 years old by September 30 of the admission year.
Nevertheless, this experience could serve as valuable preparation, positioning them for stronger performance and full eligibility in subsequent UTME attempts when they meet the age requirement.
Malpractice and Result Withholding
As part of efforts to maintain the integrity of the examination, JAMB withheld the results of 39,834 candidates. This figure includes:
- 97 candidates whose results were confirmed to involve examination infractions
- 2,157 candidates currently under investigation for alleged malpractice
- The remaining withheld results are undergoing routine scrutiny due to irregularities flagged by the board’s monitoring systems
JAMB reiterated its commitment to fairness and transparency and stated that all withheld results will be subjected to thorough verification before any decision is made to release or cancel them.

- Post-UTME screening

Meanwhile, stakeholders in the education sector have expressed concern over the declining success rates, attributing them to longstanding systemic issues such as inadequate preparation, poor infrastructure, insufficient teacher training, and lack of access to quality learning materials.
